Images from the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, including close-by, surrounding areas in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. Legend has it a Spanish priest named these mountains, as he was leaving, wounded with arrow and crossing San Luis Lake in a boat, as he died he saw these mountains turn bright red - he called out "Sangre de Cristo" Many of these peaks are actually part of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Kit Carson Peak, 14,165 ft, is now part of the Preserve!
